Learning Guitar From an Online Teacher

By Jen's Solitude

Learning how to play the guitar has been described in various ways. Some find it easy to achieve while others describe it as unimaginable and totally foreign. Perhaps learning how to play the guitar from an online teacher will make the experience more enjoyable.

I remember a friend who played the piano in ways I could only imagine. We got together and shared our sheet music with one another. I couldn’t make head or tales of her music and although my music was easy to play with chord charts as well as notes, she could not wrap her mind around the concept of playing the guitar chords in comparison to playing piano chords.

So, learning the guitar can be very difficult for some even it they are very accomplished pianists or masters of other instruments. You never know until you try and quitting before you have given yourself time to learn would be unwise as it might take a little time to adjust to different instruments.

Difficulties for the Beginner

If you are just beginning to play the guitar you are no doubt wondering how you will ever get a clear, distinct tone from the strings. Just as you think you’ve got the hang of it, because you have mastered playing one string at a time, you come crashing down to earth when you attempt your first simple chord. Don’t get discouraged, it takes time for your fingers to adjust to pressing on the strings in the desired way it takes to make music.

Finally, when your fingers seem to be getting the hang of it and you now attempt to play a few simple chords in such a way that it sounds like an actual song, the new challenge of keeping the rhythm you hear in your mind with the rhythm your hands are keeping seems like a river you will never be able to bridge across.

Don’t worry, with the correct online course your memory will increase and your fingers and your speed will begin to come together in a synchronized way. From there can strumming be far behind?

Only look for an online course with sensitivity and awareness of these beginner's issues so that you don't stay in the "stuck" position for too long of a time.

Learn from an Actual Teacher

It cannot be stressed enough, the importance of being taught by an experienced teacher. While musicians can be very good at playing songs, that doesn’t make them qualified teachers. Look for sites that advertise the fact that a teacher will be instructing you. Look for credentials and testimonials from students. Run the teacher’s name through a search and see if either the teacher or the company’s name is attached to any fraud claims or misrepresentation.

Will there be teaching methods geared to the beginner, the intermediate player, and the advanced player? If so, you can rest assured you will be doing more than learning a collection of songs, you will be improving your guitar skills and will become a good player.

Moving Past a Free Trial Membership

Trying out an online site for free is a good way of testing the site out. Don’t forget however, that there is much more to a truly superior online site, than just the free stuff.

You would be mistaken if you decided the rest of the course is not important. Where there is a good teacher involved, there is plenty more to learn. Look for a site that obviously has more to offer which will justify the membership or course fee.

Take Totally Guitars for example. From the site's homepage you are shown a T.A.R.G.E.T. area (Totally Acoustic Rapid Guitar Excellence Training Program) It is the premiere membership package so it is worth a close examination to see where your money will be going and whether what you will learn will be worth the price.

1 month membership for $29
6 month membership for $155
12 month membership subscription for $297

On top of all the regular membership perks, this site offers not just the standard one way teaching video, but the site actually allows a student to upload a video of him/her playing the guitar and asking questions. Later the student receives a video reply.

It is just one example of the type of extras to look for when you are testing out an online site and its teacher.

Can You Get Your Money Back

Any site worth considering has to have a money back guarantee in case you end up dissatisfied with the instructions. If you are joining a site that does not make it clear you can get your money back, keep on looking, it just isn't worth the risk.

How Will You Be Charged

Another important consideration for the beginner is paying for your lesson. Do you understand how payment will be made? Are you using a credit card and paying for a specified time period in advance? Will you be charged automatically when your membership expires? Are you on a month-to-month revolving charge? It is important to understand and agree with the charges before you sign up for online lessons.

Learning Guitar Songs

I suppose there is no point to taking guitar lessons if you aren't able to play at least one song in short order.

Personally, I enjoy playing by ear to my favorite songs. I don’t necessary play chords, although I am able to do so. When I want to relax, simply playing by ear in whatever way that appeals to me at the moment, is my goal. Learning different styles and techniques opens up many choices for me.

However if you want to demonstrate what you have been learning online, make sure the site has a section of songs you can easily learn so that you can thrill family and friends with your accomplishments. There are plenty of online guitar sites that concentrate on teaching specific guitar songs, some have you playing your first song in the first couple of lessons.

In conclusion, if you want to learn to play an instrument that is versatile and provides hours of enjoyment and relaxation, try the guitar.

If you don't want the hassle of traveling to a teacher or having a teacher come to you, give online guitar lessons a try.

You'll be playing before you know it and you'll notice a drop in your stress level as well.

I used to play the guitar a little. I need to put use of the guitar that has been sitting in the corner for years. The though of having to develop callouses again...ouch!
